The beautiful monuments, dimension of the buildings, the squares and the architecture in Washington DC, gave me a different point of view from the big cities in America. More than a political environmental (with a lot of police around), there we can see the many different things in the same place, depending on each individual (tourist) point of view. Like Brasília, the Federal District of Brazil, the urban planning is notorious in many places of Washington, DC, the American Capital. Founded since 1791, n honor of the president George Washington, today has about 681 Thousands inhabitants. Therefore,  the whole metropolitan area has more than 6 million people, with a high education level and high per capita income.

The strong patriotism is there all the time, in every monument, square and buildings, with memorials for political and military honors. Also many bars and restaurants have pictures of the presidents and the attraction there is the view of the political buildings, like the one we have been looking at the White House. Go out to see and be seeing is something to consider from the locals, that live in a political city full of subliminal messages of the political and economical power all around. Is evident that visit buildings, squares and monuments in this political center is the “main dish for the tourist menu”.

More than politics, of course, the cultural tourism, historic tourism, gastronomic tourism, business, events and leisure are big too. The city is surrounded by attractions for different taste and pockets.

Many tours, private or not, are offered everywhere, in every website. The city offers an easy transportation by taxi, private cars, metro, public bicycles and also tours in luxurious limo with a private specialized guide. In a big city, there is tourists all around. Walking in the downtown main streets, during the day or night, made me enchanted because the city is very big, clean, organized, signalized and safe. Just looking at the buildings architecture, that mix different styles – modern and neoclassic architecture from 1800 – is very pleasant. It reminded me some big cities in Europe, like Paris for example, but in a different way, more modern and bigger.

One of the big cultural and historical tourism attraction is the museums area, that has many of them, with free entrance and located one beside the other, in the Mall, making any cultural tourist get crazy. I visited in a short time some museums like the National Gallery of Art, the National Air and Space Museum, and the National Museum of Natural History. It was incredible nice! I didn’t want to go back to the hotel, I would like to stay all day “consuming culture and art”. All that heritage was there, so near me, so accessible like the road in front of our home, every day.

The National Mall and Memorial Parks are definitely great attractions. They are a in a very big and planned green area, where the Washington Monument is in the center. From the east and west side are aligned the Congress US Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial, with more than 20 attractions in between. It is also a great place to visit the White House, official residence of the United States president (only outside, you will need a reservation a prior and a political refer to visit inside) and the commercial buildings around it, like the National Treasure and many others.

The gastronomy is another chapter of this town. It has everything like a big American city has, in many different ways. The coffee shops and bars in the touristic area are very nice, well decorated with natural flowers (when the weather is good), tables inside and outside, very friendly. The restaurants, independents or from the hotels, are very sophisticated and offer perfect service and food. As high is the level of the restaurant, the highest is the sophistication that you will get there. Since the begin, with the bread and butter, and going to the creative plates and delicious deserts everything was great. We eat in many different restaurants like: American (Old Ebbitt Grill), French (Mirabelle), Spanish (Jaleo) and Brasillian (Fogo de Chão – Brasillian Barbacue). They were all very good and all different in terms of style, price, food and services. You really need to think about what you want as a gastronomic experience, to plan it, make reservations before you go to enjoy a very pleasure moments.

My particular way, as a tourist in a big city, is enjoy the day walking in the streets, visit monuments and squares, visit museums, experience different restaurants and make the tourist experience a memorable moment. I love to seat in the parks and squares, in the bench or grass, and look around and see the real life happening. Check how the big cities have their own dynamic between tourists and locals.

So, trying to stop this long post, I believe that everything depends on how you as a tourist wants to interact with the place you are visiting, in each trip, each different site. Each individual person has its own life experience and cultural baggage different from each other. That makes each experience be unique. Even when you go again to the same place, the experience, the impressions and satisfactions will not be the same. The tourism requires that you know yourself enough to make choices that will supposely make you happy. You have to know that in each particular moment of your life, in each specific trip.

Washington DC, like other big cities in America, has its own particular beauty. It has to be discover from different point of view. This was mine.  Tell me about yours, when you are there. See you in the next post!

A suntuosidade das praças, dos monumentos, a dimensão dos prédios, da arquitetura e da estrutura da cidade de Washington DC, nos Estados Unidos, me fizeram ter uma impressão diferente das grandes cidades Americanas. Mais do que um ambiente político e altamente vigiado com seguranças por todos os lados (o que é bom), ali co-habitam muitas nuances que podem ser desvendadas ou não dependendo do ponto de vista do turista. Assim como em Brasília, a capital política e distrito federal do Brasil, é notório o planejamento urbano em muitas áreas de Washington, Distrito de Columbia, capital dos Estados Unidos da América. Fundada desde 1791, em homenagem ao presidente George Washington, hoje abriga cerca de 681 mil habitantes. Entretanto, em toda a sua região metropolina abriga mais de 6 milhões de habitantes com elevado nível educacional e de renda per capita.

O forte patriotismo está presente todo o tempo, quer sejam nos monumentos e prédios construídos especialmente para gestão política e homenagens a personalidades e militares, quer sejam nos restaurantes e bares de happy hour onde a atração principal é estar perto da Casa Branca (como o que estivemos) ou estar rodeado de bandeiras e fotografias do presidente, de ex-presidentes e autoridades políticas.

Ver e ser visto é algo valorizado pelos moradores locais de uma capital política onde há mensagens subliminares do poder político e monetário por onde se olha. É evidente que visitar os prédios, praças e monumentos do centro político torna-se o prato principal do “menu de turista” naquela cidade.

Além da política, é claro, o turismo cultural, turismo histórico, turismo gastronômico, de negócios, de eventos e de lazer tem grande destaque. A cidade é rodeada de atrações para todos os gostos e bolsos.

Tours coletivos e individuais são oferecidos em cada esquina, em cada website. A cidade ainda oferece transporte fácil de taxis e outros em aplicativos de transporte, metro, biciletas públicas de fácil acesso, além de tours privados em limosines de luxo com guias especializados. Numa cidade grande há turistas por todo lado. Um passeio a pé, de manhã ou de noite pela área do centro turístico, me deixou encantada pois a cidade é muito ampla, limpa, organizada, sinalizada, vigiada e segura (isso é sempre relativo). O simples fato de olhar para a arquitetura dos prédios, que misturam vários estilos mais modernos com os de arquitetura neoclássica, da época de 1800, é muito agradável. Me lembrou muito algumas grandes cidades da Europa, como Paris por exemplo, mas de uma forma diferente, mais moderna e ampla.

Uma das grandes atrações para o turismo cultural e histórico é a área dos museus, que são muitos, tem entrada gratuita e estão localizados um vizinho ao outro, na área do Mall, fazendo qulaquer turista cultural enlouquecer. Consegui ver alguns em pouco tempo como a Galeria Nacional de Arte (National Gallery of Art), o Museu Nacional do ar e do espaço (National Air and Space Museum), o Museu Nacional de História Natural (National Museum of Natural History).  Foi incrível! Eu não queria voltar para o hotel, queria passar o tempo todo “consumindo arte e cultura”. Todo aquele patrimônio estava ali, tão pertinho de mim, acessível como a calçada da nossa rua, todo dia.

O Mall Nacional e os parques memoriais (National Mall and Memorial Parks) são definitivamente um conjunto de atrações imperdíveis. Trata-se de uma área verde planejada e suntuosa, onde o monumento de Washington está no centro e de uma extremidade a outra estão alinhados os monumentos do prédio do Congresso Americano (US Capitol) e o Lincoln Memorial, com mais de 20 atrações entre um e outro.  Assim também como é imperdível visitar a Casa Branca, residência oficial dos presidentes Americanos (só por fora ou pode dentro com um agendamento de muita antecedencia e referência política), e os prédios comerciais como o do Tesouro Nacional e vários outros ao redor, além de praças, estátuas e jardins.

A gastronomia é um caso a parte. Tem de tudo em grandes cidades americanas, para todo bolso. Os cafés e bares nas ruas turísticas são muito agradáveis, decorados com lindas flores naturais (quando o tempo permite), mesas dentro e fora do ambiente, muito convidativos. Os restaurantes independents, de redes e dos hotéis são muito sofisticados e oferecem comida, serviço e ambiente impecáveis. Quando mais alto o nível, mais sofisticação e requinte desde o pão e manteiga de entrada, às sopas e saladas bem elaboradas, aos pratos principais criativos e sobremesas deliciosas. Comemos em vários tipos de restaurantes incluindo: Americano tradicional (Old Ebbitt Grill), Francês (Mirabelle), Espanhol (Jaleo) e Brasileiro (churrascaria brasileira Fogo de Chão). Todos ótimos em estilos, preços e serviços completamente diferentes. Você realmente precisa pensar no que quer como experiência gastronômica, planejar e reservar antes de ir para ter momentos muito agradáveis.

Eu, particularmente, enquanto turista numa grande cidade, adoro caminhar nas ruas, visitar monumentos e praças, visitar museus, experiementar diferentes restaurantes e fazer da experiência turística, um momento memorável. Adoro sentar nas praças e parques, bancos ou gramado, e ver a vida real acontecendo, como as cidades desenvolvem sua dinâmica própria entre os moradores locais e os turistas que ali visitam, por diferentes motivos.

Então, para não me alongar mais ainda nessa postagem, acredito que tudo depende de como você gosta e quer interagir como turista em cada viagem, em cada local. Cada indivíduo tem uma bagagem de vida e cultural diferente um do outro e isso faz com que cada experiência seja única. Mesmo que o mesmo turista vá novamente ao mesmo lugar, as experiências, impressoões e satisfações não serão iguais. O turismo faz você conhecer a si próprio, pois para ser um turista satisfeito você precisa mesmo saber o que lhe agrada em cada momento particular de sua vida e o que vai lhe agradar naquela viagem específica.

Washington DC, assim como outras grandes cidades americanas, tem sua beleza particular, que deve ser descoberta em diferentes pontos de vista. Esse é o meu. Me conta como foi sua experiência, quando for por lá. Até a próxima postagem!
